Here We Go.

The Tony Rezko corruption trial is scheduled for Monday, and while Barack Obama hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing, revelations could still be damaging to him:

"We have a sick political culture," said Jay Stewart, the executive director of the Chicago Better Government Association, "and that's the environment that Barack Obama came from."

Stewart says he does not understand why Obama has lectured others about corruption in Washington and Kenya but "been noticeably silent on the issue of corruption here in his home state, including at this point, mostly Democratic politicians."

There was no immediate comment from the Obama campaign.

In short, the reform group isn't accusing Obama of anything wrong, but the group notes while Obama has been talking about cleaning up Washington, he hasn't done squat in his own backyard.

And that's about as damaging as anything that could come out of the trial.

Sure

the media are about to tear down Obama, but that's because they feel he's well-positioned as the nominee against McCain.

Contrary to the liberal media myth, it is McCain the media are heavily in the tank with.

The Clinton Campaign

is on the attack with a new ad claiming Obama isn't ready to deal with world affairs:

The McCain campaign has a similar ad:

Obama tries to hit back against his critics:

Of course Obama is lying about his Iraq record, which is identical to Clinton's.

It's Actually Very Easy to Explain

why Hillary Clinton is fighting for her political life this campaign season.

The whole primary campaign has been the result of a monumental screw-up by the DNC and other hacks in the party.

You see, with John Kerry's "defeat" in 2004, the path was cleared for a Clinton candidacy, something that has been in the works since her husband left office. The hacks, either nostalgic for a return of the Clinton years or having a desire to stick it to the Bushes, decided it was "her turn" to run for the White House. Nothing was going to stop this, despite the fact many years of GOP and media trashing made the possibility of a Hillary Clinton presidency tough at best, remote-to-non-existent at worst. Besides, it was clear the voting public was never going to buy the inherent conflict-of-interest (which all too many Clinton supporters call "sexism" for even mentioning it) of a wife of a term-limited former president running for what would amount to a third Clinton term.

So early on Clinton racked up the support of most of the party hacks around the country, raised shitpiles of money, and was way ahead in the polls thanks in large part to name recognition.

The one real challenger she had early on was John Edwards. Much supported by the party's base, he was the real threat to Clinton's "inevitable" campaign. The hacks were worried, the media was worried, business interests were worried because his economic populism posed a threat to the status quo and jeopardized the Democrats' donor base. He had to go despite setting the Democratic agenda, despite his obvious electability as president. The other qualified candidates, Dodd, Richardson, and Biden, were marginalized very early on and were seen as auditioning for the VP spot.

So, in order to stop Edwards, the hacks, with a big help from the likes of Oprah, pressured an inexperienced, laughably uniformed, and obviously tainted Barack Obama to jump into the race so as to siphon votes from John Edwards. He, not Edwards, was seen as the anti-Clinton, but he wasn't actually going to be taken seriously as a real challenger to Clinton. Well, the hacks succeed in forcing John Edwards out because they were afraid of a brokered convention, but little did they realize they created a Frankenstein in Obama. They had no idea his campaign would "take off" the way it did, thanks to media manipulation. It was pretty clear early on that Obama, not Clinton, would be the easiest for the GOP nominee to beat, so we witnessed a huge shift in coverage away from Clinton to Obama. His persona is a complete mirage, but his campaign was successfully marketed as "hope" for "change."

While I am reluctant to invoke Karl Rove's name in everything having to do with ratfucking the Democrats, I believe he was deeply involved in the strategy to get Republicans involved in the crossover states once it appeared John McCain would be the GOP's presidential nominee. Just why states even allow for crossover voting knowing it would be abused by those with the desire of messing up Democrats' chances of winning the White House is a mystery. But in any case, they have had a big hand in screwing it up for the Democratic Party, and now the party is in danger of having a turkey on its hands.

That coupled with the constant tearing down of Clinton by the media, once Edwards was dispensed with, has come close to wrecking her chances.

Of course, she could still rebound to win, and I hope she does. But it's going to be a very tough row to hoe.

As the World Turns.

Oh, my goddamned gawd:

The future of Gov. Jim Gibbons' marriage remained uncertain Thursday, pending a weekend family discussion amid talk that the first couple is set to part ways.

Dianne Cornwall, Gibbons' chief operating officer, said Thursday that his staff does not know the status of his marriage but said he is expected to talk with his family about it this weekend.

"It is a personal issue with the governor until a decision is made," Cornwall said. "And I'm not certain that a decision has been made.

...

Speculation that the couple is set to divorce or separate dominated talk among lobbyists, legislators and other politicians this week.

Jim Denton, a long-time friend and political adviser to both husband and wife, acknowledged the couple is going "through tough times."

The fact that Dawn Gibbons stayed in Nevada while Jim was in Washington when he was representative may be an indication they have been on the outs for several years.

Although the media have just reported on the story the past day or two, and I missed it, the rift has been common knowledge for quite some time.

I won't even mention the cocktail waitress incident in Vegas, either.

But Even As Obama

keeps screwing it up, that doesn't stop the media from trying to talk down Hillary Clinton in an effort to get McCain's easiest opponent in the GE.

However, the Obama camp did not respond to repeated questions from CTV on reports that a conversation on this matter was held between Obama's senior economic adviser -- Austan Goolsbee -- and the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago.

Earlier Thursday, the Obama campaign insisted that no conversations have taken place with any of its senior ranks and representatives of the Canadian government on the NAFTA issue. On Thursday night, CTV spoke with Goolsbee, but he refused to say whether he had such a conversation with the Canadian government office in Chicago. He also said he has been told to direct any questions to the campaign headquarters.

What other traditional Democratic group will he piss off?

Campaign Notes.

Obama has once again been outed as a cynical liar, this time over his NAFTA rhetoric.

Barack Obama has ratcheted up his attacks on NAFTA, but a senior member of his campaign team told a Canadian official not to take his criticisms seriously, CTV News has learned.

Both Obama and Hillary Clinton have been critical of the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement over the course of the Democratic primaries, saying that the deal has cost U.S. worrkers' jobs.

Here is the news report exposing Obama as a cynical fraud:

But then Canadian officials are criticizing the report, which, if true raises questions on the who the hell did this, and were they trying to smear Hillary Clinton's campaign with it?

The Obama campaign hasn't denied it, so it is as good as guilty of this as far as I am concerned.

_____

Since the WSWS

I like this part:

Obama’s mind-numbing platitudes—his empty slogans of “hope” and “change” and invocations of the “American Dream”—cannot address the profound contradictions of American capitalism and the crises that beset it both at home and abroad. There is, moreover, the danger, from the standpoint of the ruling elite, that his candidacy could unwittingly serve as a catalyst in the political radicalization of broad masses of working people and youth.

Should Obama, as seems increasingly likely, emerge as the Democratic presidential candidate, the divisions within the Democratic Party establishment will remain and the stage will be set for a general election that could sharply polarize the population.

Mind-numbing is right.

Obama

What a shitbag he is, helping to divide the Democratic Party in the name of unity.

The nutroots desperately wanted to believe this story because of some kind of "payback." These are the same people who are trashing Hillary Clinton using right-wing style talking points in order to help their shitbag choice:

“[S ] ooner or later,” writes the inimitable Charles Pierce, “someone’s going to have to break down this pattern he has of doing things completely contrary to what he’s supposed to be about, apologizing for it, and then getting doublecredit for the apology while the original offense goes straight down the old memory hole.” But not this time, because as Times editors ought to have realized, any attempt to apply what this column has long described as the Clinton rules to any Republican, much less a Republican popular with reporters, whom the personable McCain reportedly treats as members of his campaign entourage, was doomed to fail. According to the Clinton rules, which also applied to Al Gore and John Edwards, and may yet affect Barack Obama, allegations are treated as facts, sometimes even after they’re proved false. (Google “Gore, inventing the Internet” for a classic example. )

In Case

Here it is:

Clearly Clinton won the debate, as she has the times she has been one-on-one with Obama. She nailed him good on the subcommittee he chairs and has never held any hearings of any kind.

Naturally the media will give it to him. Too bad Clinton couldn't get in a comment on why there were so many Republicans and independents voting for him. He lied, of course, as the only reason he's getting those votes is because those are open primary states. Most of them have no intention of voting Democratic in the fall.

Clinton: 683 delegates, 232 delegates to the state convention

I have to include this:

Certainly the most outrageous was her unsolicited contribution to a few of Warhol’s “Marilyn” silk-screen paintings. In the fall of 1964 Ms. Podber, a friend of the photographer and Warhol regular Billy Name, visited Warhol’s Factory on East 47th Street in Manhattan with her Great Dane (named Carmen Miranda or Yvonne De Carlo, depending on the account). Ms. Podber asked Warhol if she could shoot a stack of the “Marilyn” paintings; he apparently thought that she wanted to take pictures of them and consented.

But she produced a pistol and fired at them, penetrating three or four. One of them, “Shot Red Marilyn,” with a repaired bullet hole over the left eyebrow, sold for $4 million in 1989, at the time setting a record at auction for a Warhol work.

Arizona former governor Evan Mecham has died at the age of 83 after years of suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

He was impeached and removed from office back in 1988. He had pissed off a lot of people and made lots of enemies. However, a few people think he shouldn't have been impeached.

Some details:

Even some leaders of the impeachment effort now say they harbored reservations about unseating Mecham but were powerless to stop it as his own combative nature and his unwillingness to make peace with political rivals fanned the flames. But one of his chief prosecutors in the 1988 Senate impeachment trial is resolute in his estimation that the historic act was necessary.

"He had gotten money for his inauguration, and the county attorney and he had agreed it was improper for him to use it personally,'' said Phoenix attorney Paul Eckstein, who made the case against Mecham with former Superior Court Judge William French.

Mecham nonetheless loaned his auto dealership $80,000 from the inaugural fund, forming the basis for one of two impeachment charges on which the Senate convicted him.

If Obama Got

This is classic guilt by association. There is no evidence Obama condones anything Ayers and Dohrn did back when Obama was in elementary and middle school. None. I am not sure how this is going to fly with voters, many if not most of whom have no memory at all of the late 1960s to early 1970s.

Dogs, Part 2.

video

Dogs of the Day.

video

Part 1

People

will talk about this closing for awhile, maybe for the next news cycle:

Let's Hope

voters in the upcoming contests remember Hillary Clinton's closing statement tonight:

SEN. CLINTON: Well, I think everybody here knows I have lived through some crises and some challenging -- (laughter) -- moments in my life, and -- (interrupted by cheers, applause).

And I am grateful for the support and the prayers of countless Americans. But people often ask me, how do you do it, you know, how do you keep going, and I just have to shake my head in wonderment because with all of the challenges that I've had, they are nothing compared to what I see happening in the lives of Americans every single day.

You know, a few months ago I was honored to be asked, along with Senator McCain, as the only two elected officials to speak at the opening of the Intrepid Center at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, a center designed to take care of and provide rehabilitation for our brave young men and women who have been injured in war. And I remember sitting up there and watching them come in: those who could walk were walking; those who had lost limbs were trying with great courage to get themselves in without the help of others; some were in wheelchairs and some were on gurneys. And the speaker representing these wounded warriors had had most of his face disfigured by the results of fire from a roadside bomb.

You know, the hits I've taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country. And I resolved at a very young age that I'd been blessed, and that I was called by my faith and by my upbringing to do what I could to give others the same opportunities and blessings that I took for granted. That's what gets me up in the morning. That's what motivates me in this campaign. (Cheers, applause.) And -- and you know, no matter what happens in this contest -- and I am honored. I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored. (Cheers, applause.)

SEN. OBAMA: (Off mike.)

SEN. CLINTON: And you know, whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that's what this election should be about. Thanks.

Here

is the link to the Austin debate.

Obama sounds like hell with a bad cold.

Edit: It's over. Of course Hillary beat him, but she was clearly being screwed over on time and being cut off. The media are out to get rid of her once and for all. I feel it's probably over for her because of the GOP ratfucking and the media bias.

Democrats are so stupid to have allowed this to happen.

THIS

is why the New York Times decided to run the McCain "affair."

So it was inoculation all right, but for the Times!

THIS article is highly interesting. I hope Gene Lyons will comment on this.

Big snip:

The McCain investigation began in November, after Rutenberg, who covers the political media and advertising beat, got a tip. Within a few days, Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet assigned Thompson and Labaton to join the project and, later, conservative beat reporter David Kirkpatrick to chip in as well. Labaton brought his expertise with regulatory issues to the team, and Thompson had done investigative work: At The Washington Post in the 1990s she had edited Michael Isikoff's reporting on the Paula Jones scandal, and in 2003 she broke the story that Strom Thurmond had secretly fathered a child with his family's black maid. Having four reporters thrown on the story showed just what a potential blockbuster the paper believed it might have.

From the outset, the Times reporters encountered stiff resistance from the McCain camp. After working on the story for several weeks, Thompson learned that McCain had personally retained Bill Clinton's former attorney Bob Bennett to defend himself against the Times' questioning. At the same time, two McCain campaign advisers, Mark Salter and Charlie Black, vigorously pressed the Times reporters to drop the matter. And in early December, McCain himself called Keller to deny the allegations on the record.

In early December, according to sources with knowledge of the events, Thompson requested a meeting with Bennett to arrange access to the senator and to discuss why the Republican presidential candidate had sought out a criminal lawyer in the first place. Bennett agreed to meet, and on the afternoon of December 18, Labaton, Rutenberg, and Thompson arrived at his Washington office. During a one-hour meeting, according to sources, Bennett admonished the Times reporters to be fair to McCain, especially in light of the whisper campaign that had sundered his 2000 presidential bid in South Carolina. He told them that he would field any questions they had, and promised to provide answers to their queries. Of the reporters in the room, Bennett knew Labaton the best. In the 1990s, Labaton had covered the Whitewater investigation, and Bennett viewed him as a straight-shooting, accurate reporter who could be reasoned with. Rutenberg he knew less well, and Bennett was miffed that Rutenberg had been calling all over Washington asking probing questions about McCain and his dealings with Iseman. The rumors were bound to get out.

Even so, McCain is inoculated against these stories.

I Hope

the three senators are okay.

link

Edit: All three are okay. They were grounded because of a snowstorm.

Robert Parry

takes issue with John McCain's denials.

What should be asked is why the New York Times sat on the story for months.

This is inoculation.

McCain

gave a lengthy news conference denying there was anything untoward in his relationship with a lobbyist:

This story is classic political inoculation. McCain is home free on this.

The WSWS

tries to dissect Obama's rambling speech of the other night in Texas.

The "ruling elite" may like him, but really he's just a stooge to go up against John McCain.

John McCain's

womanizing has never been any kind of secret, and he was messing around with Cindy while still married to his first wife.

The article was from last year along with more articles about McCain's life story.

The fact his first wife, Carol, doesn't seem to have hard feelings against him pretty much inoculates him from the womanizing charges:

In February 1980, less than a year after he met Cindy, McCain petitioned a Florida court to dissolve his marriage to Carol, calling the union "irretrievably broken."

Bud Day, a lawyer and fellow POW, handled the divorce proceedings.

"I thought things were going fairly well, and then it just came apart," Day later recalled. "That happened to quite a few. . . . I don't fault (Carol), and I don't really fault John, either."

In his book Worth the Fighting For, McCain offers his own post-mortem on his failed marriage. He "had not shown the same determination to rebuild (his) personal life" as he had to excel in his naval career.

"Sound marriages can be hard to recover after great time and distance have separated a husband and wife. We are different people when we reunite," McCain wrote. "But my marriage's collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity more than it was to Vietnam, and I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the war. The blame was entirely mine."

Carol, who remains on good terms with her former husband, generally has avoided reporters interested in hearing her side of the story.

She did briefly address her divorce to Timberg: "The breakup of our marriage was not caused by my accident or Vietnam or any of those things. I don't know that it might not have happened if John had never been gone. I attribute it more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else."

Since Hillary Clinton

has nothing to lose at this point, she better go after Obama with both barrels.

Thanks, DNC geniuses, for losing us the election by creating this horrid state of affairs.

Before I Head Off to Bed,

it's time to ask who is the now-infamous "Sexfairy"?

I spoke to the woman known as “Sexfairy” last night. Linda Figueiredo turned in former KGO Radio host Bernie Ward for child porn. (She doesn’t live at the address in Oakdale noted on the police report any longer – good thing, because the unredacted report’s been posted on-line elsewhere. Given the national interest in the story, who knows what sort of attention she would have received.) Figueiredo is a thirty-three-year-old mother of three who told police in December 2004 that she sometimes logs onto the internet to discuss sex, using e-mail and live chats. Last night, Figueiredo declined my request for an interview, saying she’s been directed not to talk until the case wraps up.

We Know

John McCain screwed around on his first wife upon returning from captivity; he has admitted this. What hasn't been clear was his relationship with a lobbyist named Vicki Iseman.

Some rumormongers who knew McCain suspected there was more than a business relationship between the two. This alleged relationship occurred eight years ago, and both Iseman and McCain deny any wrongdoing.

But even if there was no hanky-panky between the two, the fact they were close associates and there might have been some concern about conflicts of interest still doesn't sound good.

Supposedly McCain has tried to suppress the story. Oh, well, he will weather this. The national media loves him too much.

Miscellaneous.

At last there is a USSC decision I can agree with.

Of Course, Crossover Voting

and caucuses have been key to Obama's "victories," and the writer is too stupid to connect the dots.

Crossover voting in the primaries and caucuses should be BANNED because of the abuse.

Of Course

many Clinton backers and backers of other Democratic candidates will jump ship and vote for McCain--after all, that is the GOP plan.

Why do you think Obama has been promoted so much and been vetted so little?

Yours truly isn't going to vote for McCain but will write somebody else's name in should Obama be the nominee. I will not condone the rigging of the primaries in order to put forward a weak candidate against the Republican. If that means McCain gets in, so be it. But he'll get in anyway.

I Seriously Doubt

there will be "pressure" on Hillary Clinton to "bow out" when in fact she isn't far behind in delegates.

More delusional thinking by the WSWS.

Is There Any Doubt

Democrats are stupid followers who are about to hand the party a massive defeat in November, thanks to 24/7 media propaganda and caucuses and primaries which make it easy for Republicans to ratfuck the primary season?

The so-called liberal blogosphere won't ask just WHY it is the Republican primaries and caucuses have relatively few voters in comparison to the Democratic ones. Well, duh. The Republicans and indies were allowed to fuck up our elections to help them in the fall. THIS should be illegal. ALL primaries and caucuses should be closed.

Heads had better roll at the DNC, starting at the top, over this impending disaster. I haven't been very critical of the Mouth since he took over the top job, but now he has almost totally fucked up, and with him everybody else who is responsible.

We are SO screwed. The media have decided to destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton once and for all. Of course, it goes beyond saying the DNC should never have encouraged the Clintons to do this in the first place. And then the Obama thing is a total fucking disaster, just because these morons in the party organization didn't want John Edwards, somebody who could have easily won this election.

No, it couldn't happen because Edwards would have hurt their donor base. Well, now we are screwed and will get McCain in the White House.

I have written time and again the GOP has NO intention of EVER relinquishing the White House, and instead of rigging the fall elections, they will just abuse the election laws to fuck up the primaries so Democrats pick a surefire loser.

It Looks

like I will miss one more day of work, since my sinusitis returned after a few days of feeling good.

It's par for the course for this shit, and I will be glad when it is over with.

As I wrote in an earlier post, if I get this flu/sinus infection shit again, I hope I die.

It's that bad.

And Here

is the 1988 Kentucky Derby, where Winning Colors beat the boys and became only the third filly ever to win the race:

Here is the Great

1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff:

Obituaries.

Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors, only the third filly and the last one to have won the classic race when she won it in 1988, has been euthanized as a result of suffering from colic. She was 23 years old.

Although her wire-to-wire win in the Derby was impressive, to say the least, her greatest race was in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, one of the greatest races of all time. It appeared she had the race won in the homestretch at Churchill Downs, but four-year-old Personal Ensign nosed her at the wire in literally the last stride to win and retire undefeated.

A great race. Winning Colors will always be remembered.

McCain

has won the Wisconsin primary, but we will see how much the ratfuckers have succeeded in the Democratic race.

They succeeded, as Obama takes another state.

Boy Has

this guy got it backasswards.

What's funny is thanks to same-day registration and allowing crossover voting for Republicans and independents, they are ratfucking the primaries and caucuses. And they are ratfucking using Obama as the way to beat Clinton.

It's Obama, NOT Clinton, these bastards want.

Campaign Notes.

Counterpunch

has yet another piece about the ongoing Bernie Ward soap opera.

Old Ward ain't got a leg to stand on. If he wanted to investigate child porn, he should have enlisted the authorities in order to cover his stupid ass.

As it is, he'd better pray for a reduced prison sentence.

Ward's claim that he was trying to reveal hypocrisy in his Instant Message correspondent doesn't wash either. Even if she supported the likes of Dubya, wouldn't simply exposing her as a dominatrix show her two-facedness? Who needs child porn for that? It makes no sense.

So--book in the works or no book--Ward hasn't got a journalism leg to stand on. As for the two other media people, Matthews and Eichenwald, we may never know exactly what they were up to, either. They also behaved recklessly when they took up the child porn story.

In this earlier piece from a couple of weeks ago, Ward tried to explain himself:

I got an answer, from Ward himself. "I did have notes," he wrote in an e-mail. "Notes on what I was doing and conversations I had, etc. I told people I was going to write a book, and one of those people also saw the index cards that I had notes on." He also had a meeting at Perry's on Union Street with a publisher's rep, he says, and that meeting was scheduled by his producer at KGO. Ward says he has informed KGO about his notes but hasn't had access to them "because of the fear of being accused of adding to them or doctoring them in some way."

Ward adds: "I never downloaded anything to my computer, and nothing was found there."

It doesn't matter, you dumb shit. You shouldn't have even tried to mess with that crap.

Ward's trial is set for June 10.

For Fun,

Obama paid a courtesy call to John Edwards today.

I doubt any endorsement is in the works, particularly given how close the race is between Obama and Clinton.
_____

Obama's many colorful ties, and not the kind he wears, could present problems down the road.

For a man who hates the 1960s, Obama sure doesn't mind hanging out with a one-time member of the Weather Underground and husband of fellow Underground member Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers.

He's an education professor in Illinois. Most of the surviving members of the homegrown terrorist group have led quiet lives since those heady days of 30-40 years ago.

I remember the group well. They were always in the news back then, and they didn't help the image of the left, either, with their antics.

However, the association of Ayers to Obama is grist for the Republican smear machine.

Before I Hit the Sack,

I noticed Drudge, whose site I don't visit as much as I should, provided this link of the shocking internet chats of Bernie Ward, now sacked from KGO radio:

The woman gave police the photographs and a transcript of her online conversation with Bernie Ward.

It's Christmas week, three years ago. Ward's on his home computer using the screen name "Vincentlio." He begins the chat with "Good afternoon, mistress." The woman using the name "Sexfairy" answers, "How was your day, slave?" In explicit detail, Ward describes being humiliated sexually. At one point, he asks, "Are you going to make me feel dirty, mistress?" "Sexfairy" answers, "Yes, I am."

Ward discusses group sex he had at an infamous porn theater in San Mateo. Then, nearly an hour into the conversation, he brings up photographs, "I love trading pictures." "Sexfairy" answers, "and why haven't I gotten any pics, slave? Send me some."

Ward sends several pictures -- one of a woman and two children. Ward describes her as a mother in her late thirties, she's topless. He says the naked boy is 14, that the girl wearing clothes is 12. They're all touching in a sexual way.

I hope Ward has some good investments to live off of, for he'll never work again.

For Valentine's Day

I present a story of true, unselfish love:

Prosecutors say a Gresham man who claims he killed his terminally ill wife to end her misery was not the loving, devoted husband he pretended to be.

Court documents filed Monday after John Lyle Roberts was indicted on a charge of murder paint a dramatically different portrait of the man who claimed to be a compassionate mercy killer.

For starters, Virginia Roberts wasn't dying of an illness when she was shot in the head as she slept Feb. 2. And she wasn't the only woman in John Roberts' life.

The "dying" wife wasn't even sick with anything more than carpal tunnel syndrome, yet the husband decided he wanted to off her anyway. He was busy screwing around with a bunch of different women, including a prostitute. The wife was inconveniently in the way.

I wonder if there was a life insurance policy involved.
