Sparks Middle School Shooting (Updated)

There was a shooting this morning at one of the schools I used to teach at in Washoe County, Sparks Middle School. This school and nearby Agnes Risley Elementary School are both closed today.

One student was injured and it appears the shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound:

8:41 a.m. update
Sparks City Manager Shawn Carey tells the RGJ that one student was transported to an area hospital and that the shooter is dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

8:36 a.m. update:
Sparks police will hold a press conference at around 9 a.m. on the shooting at Sparks Middle School.

The shooting started just as classes began this morning.

I knew a lot of the people who still work there.

This is just devastating to hear.

Update 9 a.m.: The shooter is dead and two male minors are in the hospital and are critically injured.

Update 9:20 a.m.: The latest news is that several people were shot and two are dead including the shooter.

9:50 a.m. update:
Kyle Nucum, 13, said he witnessed another student shoot his teacher at Sparks Middle School Monday morning.

Nucum said his teacher saw the student with a gun and ran to the student to tell him to put the gun down. He was then shot.

The Reno Gazette-Journal is trying to independently verify the teacher’s identity.

Video of the student interviewed:

According to witnesses, the teacher in question was a popular math teacher. Looking at the staff directory on the web, there are five male math teachers at SMS, and three of those I had worked with several years ago.

Damn it to hell. Yes, I did work with him. He used to have a Facebook page, but it was apparently taken down.

Rest in peace, Michael. Here is one FB page in memory of the murdered teacher.
