Obituary: Mario Cuomo

I can't link to anything right now, including post videos of his great oratory, but former New York governor Mario Cuomo, 82, has reportedly died. He was what was known as a Democrat, a real one, before the neoliberal fakers like the current president and the current New York governor have all but ruined the party.

He never ran for president, even though he could have been elected. In interviews he said the reason he didn't run was he felt he wasn't good enough for the job.

His oratory was nothing short of brilliant. His speeches, which he wrote himself, were almost symphonic in structure. Cuomo knew exactly how to pace himself in his speeches, which were the quiet portions and what would be the more rousing parts.

Everybody remembers his keynote address at the 1984 Democratic Convention in San Francisco, but I think the greatest speech I ever heard in my life was his nominating speech for Bill Clinton in the 1992 Democratic Convention. It was completely and totally brilliant. Of course Bill Clinton couldn't live up to Mario's build-up.

Cuomo had a solid blue-collar background and had a solid marriage to wife Matilda. They had five children, three daughters and two sons. One son, Chris, is a journalist. The other son doesn't deserve any mention but for the fact he was sworn in for a second term as New York governor today. This son isn't fit to shine his father's shoes, let me tell you.

Mario was secretary of state before he became governor. He served three terms before being defeated in 1994 by Republican George Pataki.

This great Democrat died of a heart ailment today.
