Wednesday Miscellaneous

I hope to be online regularly soon.

Obituary: Rugby star Jonah Lomu, only 40, has died. He was a top athlete until felled by kidney trouble.

Selected late to the All Blacks squad after an injury to John Timu, Lomu burst to international fame at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa. He scored seven tries in five matches, including four in a rampaging semifinal win over England, the AP said.

In 1998, he won a rugby sevens gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. At the 1999 World Cup, he scored eight tries in six games, including two in New Zealand's semifinal loss to France.

Songwriting great P.F. Sloan, 70, has died. He became famous for writing songs such as "Eve of Destruction" recorded by Barry McGuire, co-wrote the Grass Roots classic "Where Were You When I Needed You," and "Secret Agent Man" for Johnny Rivers.

Sloan died after a short bout with pancreatic cancer.

After recording his debut single "All I Want Is Loving" / "Little Girl in the Cabin", the still-teenaged Sloan got a job with music publisher Screen Gems, who hired Sloan to work with the surf rock duo Jan & Dean. Sloan then moved to Dunhill Records, where he wrote hit songs for artists such as Herman's Hermits, the Turtles, the Searchers, the Grass Roots and Barry McGuire.

McGuire was the recipient of Sloan's best-known song, "Eve of Destruction," a catchy single that predicted the anti-war protests and civil rights movement surfacing in the U.S. during the 1960s. "Eve of Destruction" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.

Sloan was truly one of the greats of rock music history.

Bruce Jenner is getting tons of criticism from all sides. As a sexual fetishist who masturbates into women's clothes, he has no clue whatsoever what it is like to be a woman.

Glamour magazine had no business whatsoever giving a "woman of the year" award to a goddamned man. I am glad somebody here had the nerve to tell the truth.

"They didn't have the luxury of being part of the Kardashian circus," Smith wrote. "They weren't living in a Malibu Barbie beach house surrounded by what passes for family in Hollywood. They were truly brave people fighting hourly for existence.

"When Mr. Jenner said the hardest part about being a woman was figuring out what to wear (in a recent BuzzFeed interview), he proved to me that he is not truly a woman. I believe this comment and others he has made trivializes the transgender experience as I have witnessed it."

I wouldn't have been that nice.
